NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Former mayor Ed Koch was released from New York Presbyterian-Columbia Medical Center Saturday afternoon after spending a week being treated for fluid in his lungs.

The 88-year-old Koch was also hospitalized with swollen ankles due to water retention. He was told to watch his salt intake.

Koch has been admitted to the hospital several times in the last few months. In September, he was hospitalized for anemia and in December for a respiratory infection.

Koch served three terms as mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1989.
