People as far away as Grand Rapids got the word about how to do business in Detroit. According to testimony in the Kilpatrick corruption trial, that message was come down to Motown with your pockets loaded down with cash. Just leave your ethics at home.
Synagro Vice President James Rosendall wanted to haul away the city's sewer sludge, but before he could do that, he had to haul around a lot of loot, money the feds say turned into payoffs for Bernard Kilpatrick.
The normally genial Kilpatrick turned more than a little grumpy after listening to the government's star witness in the billion dollar Synagro sludge hauling scandal gave what he swore was the straight poop.
Rosendall testified that he met the mayor at the Manoogian Mansion and in a quiet meeting in the basement, the mayor told him to hire his dad.
Rosendall says he wrote big checks to the Kilpatrick Civic Fund, the mayoral campaign, and slipped Bernard Kilpatrick cash, and he always had to pick up the lunch tab like at The Original Pancakes House, which the feds had wired for sound.
Their microphones caught the pair talking about how to divvy up the Syangro money. Jurors heard a recording of Bernard Kilpatrick saying that's how it worked at Wayne County where he used to carve up deals with former Wayne County honchos Mike Duggan and Ed McNamara.
Rosendall told jurors that the mayor's dad threatened to "blow up" the billion dollar sludge hauling deal if he didn't get his cut.
"You got to remember that it's not like we heard it for the first time today," said attorney John Shea.
Rosendall testified that he used his personal bank account to pay the elder Kilpatrick and put "consulting" in the memo line so his wife wouldn't find out.
