NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD arrested a woman and questioned a second grade student at a public school in Far Rockaway, Queens, after a school safety agent found a handgun and ammunition in the boy's  bag.

Police confirmed that the gun was a .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol. It was found Thursday just after 10 a.m. at the Wave Preparatory Elementary School.

Police said it is not clear if the 7-year-old boy even knew the gun was in his bag. He also had a flare gun in the bag.

No one was hurt, authorities said.  The school was put under a lockdown during the investigation.

On Friday, police announced the arrest of the boy's mother.  Deborah Farley, 53, faces weapons and endangering the welfare of a child charges.
