Mob sweep across metro region

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The feds arrested 32 people around the metro area in connection with a long-running investigation into continued Mafia control of the private garbage-hauling industry.

They were arraigned Wednesday in Manhattan Federal Court.

The arrests began around 5 a.m. as part of a joint effort between the FBI and police in New York City and the suburbs.

Twelve of the defendants are members or associates of three different organized crime families- the Genovese, Gambino and Luchese, according to the FBI.

They allegedly worked together to control various waste disposal businesses in NYC and several counties in New Jersey.

The defendants are accused of extortion, loansharking, mail and wire fraud, and stolen property offenses.

George Venizelos, FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge, said the agency is determined to diminish the influence of La Cosa Nostra.

"The indictments show the ongoing threat posed by mob families and their criminal associates. In addition to the violence that often accompanies their schemes, the economic impact amounts to a mob tax on goods and services."
