It's still an art, but there just isn't as much dating.
Instead of setting a time and place for dinner, or even for just drinks or coffee, a lot of today's 20 and 30-somethings are meeting up, "whenever," and inviting romantic interests to hang out with their friends and roommates.
Sometimes, it's not even an invite, just a text in the wee hours for an impromptu hook-up or chat session.
An article in the New York Times called the phenomenon: "non-dating," "one step below a date and one step above a high-five," and "college hookups without the dorms."
One young woman said, "I've seen men put more effort into finding a movie to watch on Netflix..."
When we talked with people in Chicago about "non-dating," a man in his 20's showed us a message he got on his phone just last night. It's from a young lady and says "you know, man cannot live on text alone."
She, too, seems to have a problem with "non-dating."
"I know a lot of people who are just talking or what not. I personally like the dating," one person on Michigan Ave. told us.
"If you go on a date, you know it's a date and if they're out on a date with you and they know it's a date, then you're headed in the right direction," one man says. "Otherwise, there are just too many questions up in the air.
"I read that it was a guy thing to do a 'non-date,' but was a man thing to do a date. So, maybe it's just a question of maturity," another girl says.
