DETROIT (WJBK) -- Volkswagen has had much success competing in three classes in the U.S. -- the Jetta in compact, Passat in midsize and Tiguan in compact SUV. The brand now wants to jump in and compete in the popular midsize SUV class rolling out the Cross Blue SUV concept.
"This extremely fuel efficient model gives the realistic glimpse of how we at Volkswagen envision our future presence in the second most important passenger car segment in North America," says a Volkswagen representative.
Volkswagen has to be feeling really good about themselves. 2012 was the group's best year since 1973 and having seven cars that get up to 40 miles per gallon has certainly helped.
The Cross Blue Concept is a plug-in diesel hybrid that gets 89 miles per gallon. The six or seven seat, four wheel drive vehicle is how Volkswagen envisions their future.

Visitation began Saturday for Brian Woehlke, the 29-year-old Wayne-Westland firefighter killed while battling a blaze at a Westland strip mall.
