NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

State Department of Transportation officials are erecting a 4-foot high, 900-foot long fence for the Hempstead Turnpike on Long Island to keep people pedestrians safe and discourage them from mid block crossing.

DOT officials have said the fencing will be installed between Carman and Franklin Avenues across from Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow and is part of a multi-million dollar upgrade of the turnpike.

Thirty-two people were killed and at least 427 injured in 457 pedestrian incidents on the road over the six years, according to a Newsday investigation of police accident reports from 2005 through 2010.

The improvements were supposed to be completed in the fall, but state officials said that Superstorm Sandy cleanup and cold weather delayed the work.
