SOUTH PHILADELPHIA -

Twenty-one-year-old Kelly Jones wasn't just toting her infant child when she walked through the doors of South Philadelphia High School.

Police say she was also packing a loaded semi-automatic hand gun--- in a diaper bag.

Investigators tell us the young mother went to the high school Thursday morning--during school hours--to sign up for night classes.

They say when her diaper bag went thru the x-ray machine it revealed a loaded gun.

"She is claiming that she was not aware that the loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun was in the  diaper bag," explained Captain Larry Nodiff.

Police say they don't believe Jones, who has a history of assault, was at the school to harm anyone.

We're also told the gun's serial number was scratched off and Jones doesn't have a license to carry.

"School police officers did their job and stopped the threat right at the front door," said Captain Nodiff.

A South Philadelphia High School graduate and father said he was just thankful security guards spotted the weapon, considering the recent string of school violence nationwide.

"You don't need that crap around. Kids can get killed. Look what happened in Connecticut."

Fortunately, no shots were fired and no one was hurt. Jones is in jail on four different weapons charges.
