BENSENVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Investigators have some "good leads" on a suspect who caused authorities to issue an Amber Alert when the car he stole in northwest suburban Bensenville had an 18-month-old in the back seat.
The girl, Kimberly Delgado, was found safe when someone found the car Thursday morning as they were leaving for work, Bensenville Police Chief Frank Kosmen told reporters. He said Kimberly was reunited with her mother and was being evaluated by paramedics.
"I was there when they were reunited," Kosmen said. "They were very happy."
Kimberly was briefly left inside a black 2003 Buick when her mother and a friend went inside an apartment building in the 900 block of West Irving Park Road about 12:40 a.m., Bensenville police said.
With the car parked and left running, the mother entered the building and passed a man who walked out and got into the woman's car, police said. The car has the Illinois license plate L548500, police said.
Bensenville police said they do not think the man knew the child was inside the car when he stole it.
Police were looking for a suspect described as a Hispanic male wearing a red sweater.
