NJ man denied bail in NY police cannibalism case

Posted: Updated:

A New Jersey man has been denied bail after a New York prosecutor said a plot to kidnap, rape and kill a woman was more than Internet fantasies.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Pitman ordered Michael Vanhise detained during a bail hearing Monday. Vanhise was arrested last week.

Prosecutors allege he agreed to pay New York City Police Officer Gilberto Valle $5,000 to kidnap a woman he could rape and kill.

Valle goes to trial this month in a kidnap conspiracy case. Authorities say it included plans to abduct, rape, murder and cannibalize women. None were harmed.

Pitman said Vanhise should be held without bail because he seems a danger to the community. A prosecutor said he told the FBI his plans were real.
