In 2012, Detroit suffered its second deadliest year in its history when taking the size of its population into account.  We're going to need a plan.  We're going to need police, and we need a change.

Crime stats in Detroit are staggering.  Last year was the second deadliest year in the city's history.  Former police chief Ike McKinnon blames the murder rate on a mindset.

Detroit's crime problem may be part gun, part economy, part leadership or lack of leadership, but it's my view that the solution is right there behind our closed doors.
Detroit's crime problem may be part gun, part economy, part leadership or lack of leadership, but it's my view that the solution is right there behind our closed doors with each and every one of us leading by example, teaching lessons of life and setting a standard.

"The release of annual crime statistics reminds us of the senselessness of crime and violence in our community," Mayor Bing said.
"The release of annual crime statistics reminds us of the senselessness of crime and violence in our community; the challenges facing our police force; and the need to improve conflict resolution and other anti-crime initiatives," Mayor Bing said.

DETROIT (WJBK) -- The group Mothers of Murdered Children knows the numbers all too well and the very real impact they have as they help people get through the violent deaths of their loved ones.

"It's hard for a youngster to grow up in the city of Detroit in these times right here.  They may not make it to the age of 18," said Jalal Malik-Ikram.

The victims' faces now just photos, so many mothers and loved ones in mourning, so many crimes still unsolved.

"We listen to over a thousand grieving mothers, so it's perilous times right now," Malik-Ikram said.

And at Mothers of Murdered Children, they're well aware the numbers have names.

"The numbers now are 411 and that means that they're getting higher and higher, and that just gives us a constant problem with our youths today because most of these are youth related murders," said Malik-Ikram.

He is calling on Mayor Dave Bing to make more and better policing his top priority, not city finances, but city safety.

"The mayor's job is to really get a fully manned police department in order."

If not, he fears there won't be anything left to save.  Parents, pastors, the community must come together, but most important, he said the police.

"The preservation of life is first, and if everyone is getting killed, then what good is the city."
