Lockdown at Mamaroneck schools

'Suspicious' armed man prompts Mamaroneck schools lockdown

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A man claiming to be a security guard and admitting to carrying a handgun entered the Hommocks Middle School in Mamaroneck, prompting a call to the police and a lockdown of the districts schools.

The man tried getting into a locked side door of the school and then went around to the front entrance and walked into the school.

A campus supervisor walked up to the man. When the supervisor asked the man to provide his ID, he noticed that the suspicious man appeared to be holding a gun underneath his coat.

The man told the supervisor that he worked in the security field and admitted that he was armed with a gun. When told he could not remain on school grounds, the man immediately left the building.

The supervisor then called police.

Officials declared a lockdown at the schools as a precaution. Parents were told to pick up their children at the end of classes.

The district canceled afternoon and evening activities at all of its schools as a precaution.

In a statement, it said that it expected a police presence at schools on Friday.

Communities in the tristate area are exceptionally sensitive to potential threats to school after a gunman forced his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and massacred 20 children and six adults.
