Fire leaves 14 homeless, kills 12 pups

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say an unusual accident — alcohol spilling on a dirt bike's hot motor — caused a suburban New York fire that left 14 people homeless and killed 12 pit bull puppies.

Thirteen adults and a teenager were living in the three-story house on Second Avenue in Mount Vernon. All escaped the fire uninjured Thursday night.

Mount Vernon Fire Commissioner James Gleason tells Newsday the family's 13-year-old boy drove a dirt bike into the house, where alcohol somehow got on the engine. Gleason says the blaze spread from the dirt bike to bedding, "and the whole house went up."

American Red Cross spokeswoman Carolyn Sherwin says the dead pups had apparently been bred at the home. They were caged.

Officials say three other dogs survived.
