Making news around the nation Thursday night was the death
of the man best known as "Stormin' Norman."
Retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf commanded U.S. forces in the
early 1990s, and he led the international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's
Iraqi forces out of Kuwait during the first Gulf War.
Scharzkopf's sister says he died of complications from
pneumonia.
Scharzkopf was born in Trenton, and his father served as
superintendent of the New Jersey State Police.
Former President George H. W. Bush, who served as
commander-in-chief during the Gulf War, released a statement Thursday night,
saying, "General Norm Schwarzkopf, to me, epitomized the 'duty, service,
country' creed that has defended our freedom and seen this great nation through
our most trying international crises. More than that, he was a good and decent
man -- and a dear friend."
Bush made that statement from Methodist Hospital in Houston,
Texas, where he remains in the intensive care unit this evening.
The former president has been in the hospital
since last month, when he was admitted for a case of bronchitis. It has since
turned into what a spokesman called a stubborn fever.
