From games and toys to clothes and dolls, hundreds of kids this year are having the Christmas that their parents didn't think they could afford thanks to the Salvation Army and their helpers from around the Delaware Valley.

On Monday, the gymnasium of the Salvation Army looked more like Santa's workshop packed full with everything from Legos to coloring books.

Year after year, the Salvation Army collects thousands of donations to be given to families who need help the most.

"Things were looking really dim and now things are looking up," mother Nicole Stevens told FOX 29's Stephanie Salvatore.

Stevens, a mother of two boys, says this year was especially hard after she lost a baby and wasn't sure how her family would have Christmas.

The Salvation Army wouldn't be able to do the work they do without volunteers who act as personal shoppers to make sure families are getting the right toys for their kids.

"It's wonderful seeing the smiles on their faces," said Barry Abrams, a toy distribution volunteer. "We're able to brighten their lives up a little bit when things are down. It's really great."

The Salvation Army also relies on the generosity of the community to make Christmas a reality for hundreds of families.

The organization's goal is to serve as many people as it possibly can every year.
