Example of gyrocopter involved in crashAuthorities say a man has died after crashing a helicopter-like aircraft in the desert near Wellton.
The Yuma County Sheriff's Office says 64-year-old Douglas Goodman of Yuma died Sunday after crashing a gyrocopter, an aircraft that looks like a helicopter but is pushed by a rear-mounted propeller while the non-powered overhead blades create lift.
No one else was on board the aircraft.
Authorities don't know the circumstances of the crash, but deputies say the crash appears to be accidental. Criminal activity is not suspected.
The crash was reported by someone who saw the aircraft go down not far from Interstate 8 and Avenue 37E.
The sheriff's office says officials with the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will be going to the crash site Monday.
