World of Coke celebrates Christmas

ATLANTA -

We all know there are many different names for Santa Claus -- St. Nick and Kris Kringle, for example. There are also different ideas about what he looks like. But the most popular image got a big boost in the 1930s and 40s from a company in Georgia.

It all started with Haddon Sundblom. He was contracted by Coca-Cola in 1931 to create ads featuring Santa Claus. For his vision of St. Nick, Sundblom turned to a popular rhyme.

"Haddon Sundblom used the poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' as his real inspiration for what he thought Santa looked like," said Jacquie Wansley of the World Of Coca-Cola

His work was a big hit. It led to more than 30 years of new ads, and a universal idea of what the jolly old elf looks like.

"He had a big round belly, with a big belt buckle, and a mischievous kind of glint to his eye that you know he's not above raiding your refrigerator when he goes in," said Wansley.

Some of Sundblom's original holiday paintings are on display at the World of Coca-Cola. There are also holiday flavors to try right now, like Gingerbread Coke, and it's good. And a case on display features unique holiday Coca-Cola ads from all around the world.

Outside World of Coke are giant ornaments, and they are great photo ops.  They're actually made with heavy-duty styrofoam and painted with the same stuff used to paint cars!

For decades, Atlantans have woken up to Tom Sullivan on their radios.  But you might not know that he's also somewhat of an expert eBay seller, and he's got quite a story to tell.

They say the third time's a charm, and that's certainly the case for Candice Glover.  A third try on American Idol was just what she needed, and on Thursday night she was crowned the season 12 champ.
