'Tis the season for procrastinators

A quick swipe here, a swipe there, 'tis the season for procrastinators to get it all done.

It's a super weekend for shopping. Millions of Americans coast to coast are flooding stores to check off every name on their lists and looking for the best possible deals.

Shipping deadlines have passed, so web sites are now pushing for in-store pick-ups, plus there's the ever-popular gift card.

"Gift cards are actually much more acceptable than they were in the past. I think it's because consumers are on tight budgets and having a hard time shopping for themselves, so a gift card gives them permission to do that," said RetailMeNot.com Senior Editor Trae Bodge.

The National Retail Federation says more than 80 percent of shoppers will buy at least one gift card this year. E-gift cards, in particular, are a popular option for eleventh hour consumers.

Bodge says, "You can order something from Gap or iTunes and send an e-mail notification. That can be done same day. So even if you're cutting it as close as the 23rd or 24th, you can still get a gift there in time."

Many stores, like Macy's, Target and Nordstrom, are extending their hours to cash in.  Toys-r-Us has its doors open 24 hours, but it may not be the best shopping season on record.

Some analysts have slashed their forecasts for a host of reasons, ranging from Super storm Sandy to the looming fiscal cliff.
