Mesa Police have arrested a man who they say was not only shoplifting -- but left two dogs in his vehicle without water or air for four hours.
Thursday, Matthew J. Towns was inside a Mesa Walmart when he allegedly replaced the shoes on his feet with a new pair from the store.
Loss prevention officers followed him for about an hour and a half while Towns took items off the shelves and put them in his backpack, according to court documents.
Police say he then took off his backpack and placed it on a shelf, but left the store without paying for the shoes.
Towns was stopped by officers and told them he "had no intentions of paying for the shoes."
Police found 1 gram of methamphetamine in his front pocket, and Towns alleged admitted to smoking it the day before.
He also admitted to shoplifting from that Walmart in the past.
As he was being taken into custody, Towns said his two dogs were in his car. The windows were not cracked, leaving the dogs without fresh air or water for approximately 4 hours.
The dogs were "distraught" and transported to the pound, according to court documents.
Towns was booked on charges of shoplifting, criminal trespassing, possession of drugs, and animal cruelty.
