FRASER, Mich. (WJBK) -- The Connecticut school massacre and doomsday scenarios based on the Mayan calendar have prompted the closing of dozens of Michigan schools for the rest of the year.

Many schools in Michigan were scheduled to have their last day of classes before the holiday break on Friday. But districts in Genesee, Lapeer and Sanilac counties posted announcements this week canceling classes for Thursday and Friday. Click here to view all school closings.

Lapeer Community Schools says there have been numerous rumors circulating in the district and in nearby communities about potential threats.

At Fraser High School in Macomb County, police say a student posted on Facebook that the world was going to end in a few days, so he was going to bring a gun into the building on Friday. Officers led that young man off the property. He's now in custody and expected in court Thursday. Click the video player to watch a video report from FOX 2's Robin Schwartz.

A letter was sent out to Fraser High School families about the incident. The letter also reminded them of the safety procedures. Extra officer plan to be on campus for the remainder of the week.

"Okay, we've got one guy, but there's a rumor going around there might be a group of people.  Let's take that serious, too, not just say, 'Okay, well, we'll look into it.'  Well, let's not look into it.  Let's do something about it.  Let's get down to the bottom of it," said parent John Guerra.

Friday is supposedly when ancient Mayans prophesized the end of the world. Stepped-up police patrols are planned at some Detroit-area schools.
