A First: Gay Marine Proposes At The White House

Posted: Updated:

The White House just had another first happen.

Down on one knee, U.S. Marine Corps Captain Matthew Phelps proposed marriage to his partner, Ben Schock, at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

It happened when the two of them were taking a Christmas tour of the national mansion.

The couple's engagement comes 14 months after the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

"It's my turn to live my life as openly as I want," Phelps said.
