FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Flagstaff police have subdued a suicidal man who fired shots and held officers at bay for about eight hours.

Police say they were called to a home Friday night and learned the 27-year-old man planned to commit "suicide by cop."

Sgt. James Jackson says a SWAT team was called and negotiators began trying to convince the man to surrender. Several times officers heard gunshots and the man would then stick his head out a window and taunt officers. They never fired because he didn't point his gun.

The SWAT team finally rushed in and shocked the man with a Taser. He was arrested for disturbing the peace and receive a mental evaluation.

Chief Kevin Treadway praised his officers for their restraint and focus on the department's mission to preserve life.
