Police have a suspect in connection to a bank robbery and police chase Friday morning.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said the suspect walked into National Bank of Arizona at Mayo and Scottsdale Road about 10 a.m. He demanded money, then locked the employees into the vault as he made his escape on a bicycle.
Martos said the suspect then went to a nearby apartment complex, put his bicycle in the back of a U-Haul, then fled. This same individual is believed to have committed another bank robbery about a month ago at the same bank, Sgt. Martos said.
An officer with knowledge of the prior case saw the U-Haul at Scottsdale Road and Bell and initiated a pursuit. The U-Haul refused to stop and got into a collision with two other vehicles at Frank Lloyd Wright and Hayden.
The driver then ran from the scene on foot and was chased by a Scottsdale Battalion Chief. He unsuccessfully tried to carjack a semi driver and fled into a nearby car wash, where he was ultimately Tased and taken into custody, Martos said.
The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Kenyatta Kindu.
"No regard for other people on the roadway, gets in a collision with two other vehicles, then attempts to carjack a couple individuals, certainly a potentially dangerous situation," said Martos.
Martos is also crediting the Battalion Chief for his help taking down the suspect.
Charges are pending. No one was seriously hurt.
