Cell phone service can be suspect at times, depending on carriers and areas, so who would argue with better service?
Well, plenty of people. Especially if that service means a new cell tower in their neighborhood.
There are already other cell phone towers in the area near Baseline and Gilbert Roads. The new one would be 70 feet tall.
AT&T says its needed to improve service and they'll disguise it as a palm tree -- so it doesn't look too ugly. But neighbors are circulating a petition to stop construction.
"What's it going to do to the neighborhood?" says resident Margaret Howatl. "There are a lot of places where it could fit in, just not right in front of a neighborhood. Someone where it would be isolated."
The tower would be taller than any other building in the neighborhood. AT&T says the proposal meets local and federal policies -- but like many, Margaret worries about radiation.
"With the amount of kids that play of this block alone and in this neighborhood, the amount of energy coming off this cell phone tower, what is it going to do to the kids?"
The matter goes before the board of adjustment Tuesday night. It's expected to be a packed house.
