Police are searching for a masked gunman after a shooting in southwest Atlanta left a 11-year-old girl injured late Tuesday night.
It happened at The Villas at Lakewood Apartment Homes on Amal Drive shortly after 11 p.m., according to Atlanta police.
Investigators say the victim's father told them that as he approached the front door of his home, he heard a noise that sounded like keys rattling. When he turned around to see where the noise was coming from, he told police he saw a man wearing a white shirt and a black ski mask armed with a shotgun.
As the father ran into the apartment, he slammed the door and then heard a bang. He told his family to get upstairs and call 911. He told police it was at that point that he noticed that his daughter bleeding from her left foot.
A neighbor, Fatima Mosley, lives next door and heard the gunshots. She told FOX 5 she didn't know the young girl had been shot until after police arrived. She and other residents are alarmed at the violence in their normally quiet community.
"Think of the lives you are affecting to get the couple of dollars you will get. Because what if you would have taken the little girl's life? She doesn't have a chance anymore to even go and live her life because you're trying to get a couple of dollars," said Mosley.
Investigators say the girl had injuries to her left foot and ankle from the shotgun blast. The girl was taken to Children's Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston, and is said to be in stable condition.
Police say robbery appears to be the motive.
