Organization helps troops get Christmas trees

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -

The tree is the centerpiece of the Christmas season. For most of us, the smell and the feel remind us of good times, and a national organization is making sure our troops get in the Christmas spirit.

For many, it's an after Thanksgiving tradition. Families from all over make the trek to Minter's Tree Farm in Fayetteville to take pictures and pick the right tree.

"We look for one that's full as possible and it's got a good green color to it," said Vance Hobbs.

Rick Minter of Minter's Tree Farm says as a kid, he remembers the experience of going out and cutting a down a tree, bringing it home and putting it up. He says it's about the experience you have with the family during the holiday season.

But not everyone will get to have that experience. There are troops who will be away from home and on duty this Christmas. Minter's Tree Farm has come together with tree growers across the nation in Trees for Troops.

"Trees for Troops is a cooperative effort between Christmas tree growers and FedEx. And what we do is we donate some trees and our customers can also purchase a discounted tree, and we'll take them to drop spots. FedEx will deliver to military bases around the country so people on duty will have a Christmas tree this season," said Minter.

While the troops may miss out on a hay ride, and the back breaking work of cutting a tree down, they'll still get to feel the spirit of Christmas.

Since 2005, Trees for Troops has delivered more than 103,000 real Christmas trees to troops and military families. FedEx helps ship them to more than 60 bases in the U.S. and Middle East. For more information on the program, click here!
