Abraham Diaz HernandezA 56-year-old woman is in critical condition after the driver of a car collided with her and immediately left the scene on Tuesday night near Ruthrauff Road and Kain Avenue.
Pinal County Sheriff's deputies say 31-year-old Abraham Diaz Hernandez allegedly struck the pedestrian after she walked into the road in front of his car.
Hernandez told deputies he saw her at the last second, tried to avoid her but ended up hitting her with the side of his car.
The woman was taken to an area hospital and remains in critical condition.
Deputies say the woman wasn't in a crosswalk when she was hit and a combination of poor lighting and dark clothing made her difficult to see.
Hernandez didn't appear to be impaired by alcohol or drugs and deputies aren't considering speed a factor, according to authorities.
After Hernandez went home and talked to his family about what happened, he returned to the scene and cooperated with deputies.
Hernandez was booked into the county's adult detention center on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury.
