Leteve penalty phase continues in emotional day of testimony

PHOENIX -

He's already been convicted of shooting and killing his two young sons. Monday, emotions were high as the penalty phase resumed for Andre Leteve.

Prosecutors say Andre Leteve killed his children to get back at his wife for leaving him. Defense attorneys are trying to convince jurors he does not deserve the death penalty for the crimes.

Andre Leteve sat stone-faced for much of Monday's court proceedings, listening to people describe his troubled life that exploded into violence against his two young sons, one Wednesday morning in 2010.

911 Operator: "Okay, what is going on?"

Leteve: "I just shot and killed my sons and I shot myself."

911 Operator: "You did what?"

Leteve: "I shot and killed my sons."

More than 2 and 1/2 years later, a jury listened to evidence to decide whether Leteve should face the death penalty.

Monday in court, Scottsdale police detective Hugh Lockerby described some of the journals found in the home written by Leteve.

Leteve described his life as lonely, in financial ruin, and his marriage unraveling.

Some of the entries read by the prosecutor seemed to indicate Leteve was planning to move forward after his divorce.

"Structure work schedule, so I have time for boys. Then, become outstanding father to Alec and Asher."

Alec and Asher were Leteve's two sons. He shot and killed them on March 31 of 2010.

It shocked the people who knew him, like former work colleague Jody Diaz. She told the court how she remembered Andre Leteve around his sons.

"Loving, exceptional, very patient, kind, caring," testified Diaz.

There were also references to his struggles with medication and alcoholism.

Leteve, now 40, has been convicted of two counts of first degree murder. He could be sentenced to the death penalty.

This phase of the trial will continue on Tuesday with more testimony from family and those who know Leteve.
