Marietta police evacuated businesses and shut down Cobb Parkway after a tractor-trailer overturned on Monday.
Marietta police spokesperson David Baldwin said that authorities believe that nearly 50,000 pounds of the liquid chemical Sodium Hydroxide leaked from the overturned truck on Cobb Parkway NE near Canton Road.
A Hometown Inn hotel was evacuated as a precaution.
There were no reports of injuries.
"An environmental company will be on scene to help contain anything that leaks out of the trailer itself and then really at that time they will gauge how much spilled out and exactly what the cleanup will take, how long it will take at that point," Baldwin said.
All lanes of Cobb Parkway were closed between Bells Ferry Road and Allgood Road were closed for several hours. All lanes were reopened at around 2:47 a.m. on Tuesday.
Marietta police say the ramp to the Canton Road Connector from Cobb Parkway will be temporarily closed during the mid-morning hours on Tuesday while crews continue to clean up the spill. When the ramp will be reopened is unknown.
