Complaints to the FDA cite 5 Hour Energy in 13 deaths

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

It's one of the most popular energy drinks out there – "5 Hour Energy." It's supposed to get you going through the day -- but some claim it is linked to some deaths.

This is not the first time we've heard of an energy drink or shot associated with deaths.

One man we spoke with says the news isn't stopping his habit.

"It's an every morning event."

Brent Farley says he and his wife drink 5 Hour Energy every morning halfway through their Mesa paper route.

"It gives you the added boost you need," he says.

However, published reports say the Food and Drug Administration has received reports of 13 deaths over the last 4 years that cited 5 Hour Energy.

However, the filings don't necessarily mean the product is responsible for a death or even contributed to it.

"We're driving. How many car accidents are there? I'm just drinking a shot that helps get the job done, so no I've never been concerned."

The news comes less than a month after the FDA announced it's looking into reports of 5 deaths that could be linked to Monster Energy drinks.

In a statement, the distributor of 5 Hour Energy says each shot has about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.

They point out the label recommends people drink no more than 2 bottles of the shot a day and spaced several hours apart.

They say they are unaware of any deaths proven to be caused by the energy shot.

"Common sense kind of gets you a long way. If I go drink 5 in the morning, I'm probably going to have a health problem," says Farley.

Farley says the reports aren't stopping him. He plans on taking his 5 Hour Energy again tomorrow.

"We'll take our shot and finish the paper route."

The FDA does not require companies to disclose caffeine levels -- however some lawmakers want to change that.
