DETROIT (WJBK) -- A Detroit police officer was shot in the line of duty late Wednesday afternoon at the Swanson Funeral Home on the city's east side.  It appears he will be okay because of his bulletproof vest.

We're told police tried to stop a man driving a stolen car.  The driver was wanted for assault with intent to murder and was under surveillance.  Officers ordered him to stop, but he took off, rammed a police car and ran into the funeral home, eventually escaping through the back door.

"When he (came) running out the back, he (came) running out shooting," said a construction worker.  "He pulled out a gun.  I thought he worked there.  I was looking right at him and then that cop jumped in front of me and they started just wild west shooting each other."

The officer was shot in the back.  The suspect was shot multiple times.  He's expected to survive.

"The officer is fine," said Detroit Police Commander Steve Dolunt.  "The bullet lodged in his vest and he's in good shape."

"I'm thankful that the officer was not injured any worse than he was, and I'm also thankful that the suspect wasn't injured any worse than he was," said Interim Detroit Police Chief Chester Logan.

The police department has not released the officer's name, but we do know he has been with the department for eleven years and works Special Ops.

Meanwhile, the suspect is in police custody.
