Two horses and a dog were killed Sunday morning when a freight train collided with a truck towing a horse trailer in Yavapai County.
Police say a 71-year-old man was towing a two stall horse trailer across train tracks when a BNSF freight train ran into the trailer in Paulden, about 25 miles from Prescott.
The man told police he didn't hear the train's warning horn or see the train as he was driving across the tracks. The truck made it safely across, but the trailer was struck but the train's leading locomotive.
Yavapai Animal Control officers transported one injured dog to an animal hospital but two horses and another dog died at the scene.
The driver wasn't injured and the truck had minor damage; he was cited for failure to stop at a railroad crossing.
This particular crossing doesn't have gate controls and uses signs to warn drivers and pedestrians.
