Parade: Healing Wounds, Honoring Their Sacrifice

PHOENIX -

One of the biggest Veterans Day parades winded through the streets of central Phoenix on Monday. Veterans marched in it and veterans along the parade route cheered them on.

It's a day to honor every veteran. Veterans from different wars and different military branches lined up along 7th street in central Phoenix to watch a parade in their honor.

"I think it's a great thing to observe," says Tony Caruso, Vietnam War vet.

Tony Caruso and his family got to the parade route two hours early.

"We wanted to get a real good seat."

He joined the navy in the 60's during the Vietnam War, repairing destroyers hit by enemy fire in the China Sea.

His job was keep them floating. Caruso is proud of his service, but a little embarrassed by all the attention.

"To me it's something I wanted to do. I didn't do anything special, I really appreciate the accolades they gave me, I like that."

Chris Challahan joined the army in 2004. He was shipped off to Afghanistan as a combat engineer.

"Looking for mines and explosions and stuff, it's a dangerous job but exciting," says Challahan.

He brought his sons to the parade to honor veterans both alive and dead.

"I did lose a few of my friends. It's unfortunate, they wanted to do it, was a choice."

And it was a choice for Challahan as well. He believes he is a better man for his time in the service of his country.

"It's pretty heartfelt, you know coming out here and seeing people from all over, different backgrounds, different areas and everything. I love this parade."

They all have something in common -- they are brothers and sisters in arms, with their own stories.

This is the 16th year for the VA Veterans Parade. It's one of the biggest veterans' parades in the country.
