A valley woman can't wait to get on the ground in New York and start making a difference. She'll be volunteering at least three weeks with the Red Cross.

"It's hard to sit at home and watch everything on TV and not feel like I'm doing anything, so this way I feel like I'm doing something," said Michelle Maki.

Red Cross volunteer Michelle Maki is looking forward to her trip to White Plains, NY on Monday.

"It's not gonna be pretty but my main focus are the folks that need help," said Maki.

Maki will continue her duties as a public information officer but has also been selected to drive an emergency response vehicle.

She's prepared for freezing temperatures and uncomfortable sleeping conditions.

Maki said volunteers are seting up shelters, providing meals, helping residents cleanup and most importantly, giving emotional support.

"You're helping these folks, you're helping them through the recovery process and sometimes really that's what they want, someone to listen to their story," said Maki.

Maki said she and all of the Red Cross volunteers live for opportunities to help, even though they don't get paid.

"You know, when I get that hug from someone, that's my paycheck," said Maki.
