Child on bike hit by car, critically injured

PHOENIX -

A 12-year-old girl on a bicycle was critically injured after being hit by a car Halloween afternoon.

The girl was riding with her dad about 3:45 p.m. and they were waiting to cross the street in a crosswalk, at 20th Ave and Indian School.

Oncoming traffic slowed down for them, so the little girl took the lead and crossed -- but a car in one lane of traffic didn't see her and hit her. She was tossed several feet away where another car ran over her and dragged her a short distance.

She was rushed to the hospital in bad shape.

Westbound traffic on Indian School is closed at 19th Ave, and the closure is expected to continue through rush hour.

Detectives are investigating what happened. We hear the drivers stayed at the scene.

Sunlight may have been a factor.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump is reminding parents to keep a close eye on their kids, as Halloween is one of the most dangerous nights of the year for children.
