PHOENIX -

Opening statements began Monday morning in the trial of a Scottsdale father accused of shooting his two young sons and then turning the gun on himself.

Andre Leteve survived, but his boys were killed.

Both the defense and the prosecutors agree, Andre Leteve killed his kids then tried to kill himself. Prosecutors say it was premeditated. Defense attorneys say it wasn't.

After the shootings, Leteve made a chilling 911 call from his home near Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive.

911 Operator: "What's going on?"
Leteve: "I just shot and killed my sons and shot myself."
911 Operator: "You did what?"
Leteve: "I shot and killed my sons."

5-year-old Alec and 1-year-old Asher appear to have been in the middle of a nasty divorce. Prosecutors say Leteve was jealous that his soon-to-be ex-wife had moved on with a new boyfriend.

Defense attorneys say he just snapped and it wasn't planned, but prosecutors told the jury Leteve planned everything.

911 Operator: "Where did you get shot? What part of your body did you shoot yourself?"
Leteve: "The face."
911 Operator: "In the face… are you putting anything over where you're bleeding from?"
Leteve: "No."
911 Operator: "Okay I'd like you to put something over where you're bleeding from, okay."

Court records show that Leteve was worried that his estranged wife was going to take the boys and move to Florida.

The jury saw two suicide notes left at the scene, and prosecutors say Leteve spent days on his computer modifying the notes. He also allegedly made his 5-year-old son Alec sign one of them.

One note read: "This should f--- you for a long time to come. For everything you get in life you must give something up. Enjoy the rest of your life without us."

Also Monday, a Scottsdale Police officer testified. She was the first one at the house after the shooting. She got teary-eyed when talking about finding the kids.

Leteve pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
