Lt. Col. Dan HamptonOne of the most decorated F-16 fighter pilots is sharing his story in a new book that details what it was like to have the most dangerous job in modern air combat.
Lt. Col. Dan Hampton wrote "VIPER PILOT: A Memoir of Air Combat" about his experience as a member of elite pilots known as the "Wild Weasels".
Their mission in the Gulf War and Iraq War was to take out surface to air missile sites so that other planes could enter safely into enemy territory.
Throughout Hampton's 20-year career, he secured American airspace on 9/11 while his dad was inside the Pentagon, spearheaded the 2003 invasion of Iraq-the first plane over the border, personally destroyed Saddam Hussein's escape helicopters in Baghdad and was decorated for saving a surrounded U. S. Marine unit from certain death.
