MESA, Ariz. -

A mother was arrested for allegedly slapping her son and attempting to punch her husband on Tuesday night.

An officer responded to a call about a family fight involving a knife at a home near Meridian and Elliot Roads.

When the officer got there, he said he saw 32-year-old April Gemar take a punch towards her husband, Joshua Gemar, through an open front door.

Both April and  Joshua, told officers they originally started fighting because Joshua thinks April drinks and sleeps too much.

During the fight, April started waving a small kitchen knife at Joshua, but he told police he didn't feel threatened.

April's son told police that earlier on Tuesday, his mother was angry with him because she got complaints about him from his teacher.

Her son then told police she allegedly slapped him across the face and when he tried to leave the house, she grabbed and ripped his shirt off of him.

The couple have one child together and two children from other relationships.

April Gemar faces charges of child abuse and assault.
