DETROIT -- Bursts of color eclipse the gray and the grit. The Grand River Creative Corridor has seen mural after mural appear along Grand River from Warren Avenue to Rosa Parks over the past few months, but there is a problem.
"My nightmare is basically someone's going to be standing right there or have their car parked there and this whole top half of the building is going to collapse," said Derek Weaver from the Grand River Creative Corridor.
He's the guy behind the art and redevelopment efforts. They have been getting a lot of attention from the public and photographers interested in the art along Grand River. Sure, some of the buildings are in pretty rough shape. One doesn't even have a roof. However, it's the problem at a building connected to the busy Grand River Post Office that really has them worried. A few months ago it was fine, but the facade is now pulling away from the structure. Bricks are about to crumble.
Weaver and the artists are so concerned about somebody getting hurt that they've taken it upon themselves to put up caution tape and block off the area.
"Hopefully we get it fixed and we carry on with the mural and it's safe for the community and the spectators... and myself. I don't want to get hurt doing it." said Sintex, a graffiti artist working on a Motown mural on the building.
He's watched the problem get worse over the last few months. Weaver has tried contacting the owner of the building and so has FOX 2, but to no avail.
They're worried anybody walking past or parking there for the post office will be hurt by falling bricks. The Grand River Creative Corridor hopes somebody steps up to make the repairs.
