PONTIAC, Mich. -- The Oakland County Sheriff's Department says a toddler was found in a car alone over the weekend in the vicinity of Orchard Lake Road near South Johnson Street in Pontiac.

"They tried to wake the child, couldn't wake the child.  They knocked on the door.  No one was around," Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard explained.

We're told there was a bottle of alcohol on the floor of the backseat, a crack pipe in the center console and the almost two-year-old boy was sound asleep in his car seat.  Police broke into the car.  The child was fine.  His 49-year-old aunt arrived while investigators were on scene.  She said she was in the car with the baby's 44-year-old mother when they ran out of gas.  The mother had been on her way to a drug house and disappeared.  The aunt went looking for her, but never found her.

"The investigation is still trying to pull together all the facts, and then, ultimately, a warrant package will be presented to the prosecutor for a determination of what charges may be applicable," Bouchard said.

The mother does have a criminal history of drug arrests.  The child was taken into protective custody and released to his father.
