WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) - Nearly 30 Navajo Nation employees have been laid off and 48 other positions have been eliminated thanks to a 2013 budget gap.
The Gallup Independent reports (http://bit.ly/z0cIwR) that 27 employees were let go last week, including 11 staff from the Office of the Controller.
Personnel Management Director Bernadette Bernally told the Budget and Finance Committee that of the 27 laid-off tribal employees, one opted to resign.
Bernally says Personnel Management has identified 17 positions that the laid-off employees could fill, and that the department will work with the divisions and programs to get those workers rehired.
Officials say the laid-off workers have six months of reemployment preference.
