In Arizona's 5th statewide Prescription Drug Take-Back Effort, the DEA collected more than 8,000 pounds of prescription drugs.
During the past 5 years of this program, law enforcement took back 35,000 pounds -- 17.5 tons -- of medications from circulation.
The nationwide DEA campaign was held on Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and gave people the chance to properly dispose of their unwanted and expired medications safely.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
