Two officers were injured while trying to arrest a man for shoplifting.
Mesa police responded to a shoplifting call at an Ulta salon near U.S. 60 and Signal Butte Road on Saturday. When they approached the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jason Roberts, he started running around the store and towards the front door.
According to the police report, one officer followed the Roberts down an aisle, while the second officer headed to the back door to block the exit.
As Roberts ran towards the door, he collided with the officer, causing both of them to fall. The second officer's head struck the floor, causing a 1 to 2 inch laceration.
A physical altercation ensued between the officers and Roberts. The first officer sustained abrasions to his forehead and chin and Roberts grabbed his throat.
When the second officer attempted to deploy a taser, Roberts grabbed it and tried to pull it away from him before it was turned on. The report states that after the other officer was able to get it away from Roberts, "..both officers simultaneously deployed their tasers, striking Jason."
Roberts was transported to a local hospital for an evaluation. Upon release, he was booked for three counts of aggravated assault, possession of dangerous drugs and shoplifting.
The second officer was hospitalized and treated for the lacerations on his head.
