Fire damages family's upholstery business

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

A family-owned upholstery business was damaged by a fire early Monday morning near 27th Avenue and Missouri.

No one was inside the Lopez Auto Tops shop at the time.

One of the biggest problems crews had to deal with was the smoke.

"They found heavy smoke, but weren't able to find the actual seat of the fire due to the heavy fire load inside due to the materials and tapestries used for their business," said Larry Nunez of the Phoenix Fire Department.

Crews are calling the fire suspicious because the fire started outside of the building and made its way inside.

According to firefighters, the family has no insurance and they've had issues in the past with transients in the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

27th Avenue north and southbound will be closed while crews clean up the scene.

This is a developing story.  Stay with FOX 10 News for updates.
