Phoenix police have identified a man who shot at officers and then led them on a chase that ended with him killing himself Friday.
Police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said 33-year-old Jodon F. Romero was a wanted felon who stole a car at gunpoint late Friday morning. Thompson said Saturday that an officer fired at Romero just before he committed suicide in the desert miles west of Phoenix but he apparently was not hit.
Officers followed Romero for close to 70 miles before he eventually got off I-10 at 491st Avenue, west of Tonopah.
From there he headed down some dirt roads and at one point, Romero shot at the police helicopter watching overhead.
After nearly 90 minutes on the run, the suspect got out of his car with the gun and started running before eventually pulling the trigger and ending his life.
Thompson said Romero had previous convictions for violent acts and was wanted for parole violations.
