DETROIT (WJBK) -
Kavon Coleman is a star athlete who should be enjoying his senior year of high school. Instead he is badly wounded and barely able to get out of bed. He was shot at a bus stop because somebody allegedly wanted his sneakers.
He must use a walker to move. It takes Coleman five pain filled minutes to go from his bedroom to the living room sofa only 30 feet away.
Coleman worked hard and saved $410 to buy a pair of Air Jordan Retro basketball shoes. With his new shoes on, he and a buddy got off the bus at Forrer and Schoolcraft in northwest Detroit at 8:00 p.m. on August 18.
"They (were) in a minivan. The one pulled the door back. Then the one on the passenger side hoped out. They (said), 'Don't run,' and my friend took off and then I kind of froze," Coleman explained.
Suddenly, he was shot. He ran, but then collapsed. Witnesses said that van sped off. They did not steal his shoes.
The 18-year-old was riddled with pain. Doctors told him he was shot in the rectum, the abdomen and a bullet tore through a nerve in his right leg. He has trouble moving his right foot.
Coleman has a colostomy bag attached 24 hours a day. He wishes he was with his friends in high school, and he is surprised he is alive. His buddy returned after the shooting to help him get to the hospital.
"I was laying there. I kept telling him like I'm about to die, bro. He grabbed my hand and told me I wasn't about to die," said Coleman.
Detroit EMS rushed Coleman to Siani-Grace Hospital. He slept for three days while doctors performed surgeries.
The 6'1", 170 pound basketball star with a table full of trophies who also ran high hurdles in track has lost 45 pounds and now weighs 125 pounds.
"He's still living his life (normally) while... I'm in pain every day, all day," Coleman said.
He hopes someone can help identify the person that shot him. If you have information call Detroit Police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
Coleman told us he is confident he will play basketball again.
