DETROIT (MyFox Detroit) -

A 19-year-old woman is dead and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Julian Bogan, the son of Gary Brown's head of staff, is in the hospital after a brutal attack Wednesday morning on Oakfield near McNichols and the Southfield Freeway on Detroit's west side.

Police say the couple was shot. The car they were inside was set on fire. The 19-year-old died on the scene, but Bogan made a run for it. He was chased down and doused with gasoline before police arrived.

In addition to being head of staff for Detroit City Council President Pro-Tem Gary Brown, Julian Bogan's father, Sidney, also sits on the Wayne County Board of Ethics. He spoke to Fox 2 by phone and said his son told him a very different story. The 21-year-old said he and his girlfriend were carjacked and driven to Oakfield before they were robbed and attacked.

Police won't confirm that story except to say they're investigating all possible angles.

This tragedy brings Detroit homicide numbers to 36 for September alone.

Bogan, who was recently paroled for home invasion, was shot in the face and is in stable condition with severe injuries to his jaw. He has not yet been interviewed by police.
