ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -
On Thursday night, about 300 St. Paul kids learned what it's like to live with visual impairment caused by Stargardt disease after a 12-year-old boy decided he wanted to share his experience with friends.
Louie McGee told FOX 9 News he got the idea after his parents when to an adult version of Dining in the Dark and came back with a new appreciation for the challenges he faces at every meal. He wanted to show his classmates too.
Thursday night's dinner doubled as a fundraiser, but more importantly helped McGee's schoolmates understand what their fellow student has to struggle with.
The mystery meal was kept a secret from the kids at Highland Catholic School -- because they were all wearing blindfolds.
This isn't the first time McGee has tried to show others what his retinal condition is like. He helped create a video on YouTube to show how his form of macular degeneration robs him of his central vision and forces him to rely on peripheral vision.
"Louie doesn't see his vision loss as loss," explained Annie McGee. "He sees it as seeing differently, and I think that's a very hopeful perspective for life."
