Jordan A. Murphy-MahoneyPolice suspect a 22-year-old woman was driving drunk when she ran over a 21-year-old bicyclist in an intersection Sunday night.
Officers learned from witnesses that the victim was riding her bicycle near Walapai Drive and Mohawk Road when she was hit from behind by a truck. Police said the driver drove away after she hit the bicyclist.
The woman had life threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The victim was identified as Jordan A. Murphy-Mahoney, a student attending Northern Arizona University.
Police were given a description of either a white or silver truck with significant front end damage. A short time later, officers were told a truck matching the description turned onto a street near the collision and may be parked nearby.
Officers said they were able to find the suspected truck and spoke to its driver.
Police identified Kelsey Lou Cody, who said she wasn't driving the truck when the damage happened. After further investigation, police said they found evidence to believe Cody was driving at the time of the collision.
Cody was arrested for failing to stop after being involved in an injury/fatal accident and for manslaughter as a result of the collision.
During the beginning of the investigation, police said they believed alcohol was a factor in the collision.
Police are continuing to investigate what happened.
