Strange balloon launched by weather service

Posted: Updated:

You may have seen a strange balloon floating in the western sky Saturday. Some thought it had escaped from a pack of helium balloons or was an UFO.

The balloon has been identified as a weather balloon launched by the National Weather Service.

They launched a research balloon from Fort Sumner in eastern New Mexico.

Fort Sumner is the spring and fall home of NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility. The balloon carries instruments that gather atmospheric information and is launched once a year by the research facility.
